HEXICON IN ITALY

Discover Hexicon’s floating offshore wind projects in Italy. In a country where floating offshore wind is still in its infancy but where renewable energy ambitions offer a great opportunity, with its deep-water coastlines, floating wind is, in many areas, the only offshore alternative.

THE FLOATING OFFSHORE WIND MARKET IN ITALY

Italy is emerging as one of the most significant markets in Europe for floating wind, aiming to generate 55% of its electricity from renewables by 2030, particularly from wind and solar power. With an extensive coastline and favorable wind conditions, particularly in the deep waters of the Mediterranean Sea, Italy presents a strong potential for floating wind, making it a key focus for Hexicon.

PROJECT PLANNING IN ITALY

Italy has made significant strides to support offshore wind projects, particularly through incentives like the FER2 decree, which aims to subsidise up to 3.5 GW of floating offshore wind capacity by 2030. The Italian government has recognised that offshore wind projects, especially floating ones, are crucial to meeting their renewable energy targets, and this scheme provides vital financial backing to make these projects viable in the near term. Additionally, the country has simplified the permitting process with the Decreto Semplificazioni Bis to reduce bureaucratic delays, which have historically slowed down renewable energy developments.

These reforms make Italy an attractive market for floating wind technology, with companies like Hexicon well-positioned to benefit from both the financial support and the streamlined regulatory framework.

OUR JOINT VENTURE AVENHEXICON

In 2021, Hexicon AB and Avapa Energy formed the joint venture AvenHexicon to develop floating offshore wind projects in Italy, capitalising on the country's vast potential for renewable energy. Hexicon chose to partner with Avapa Energy due to their deep local expertise and established presence in the Italian energy market, which is critical for navigating the regulatory landscape and accelerating project development. Together, AvenHexicon is currently working on seven floating wind projects, four of which are already active, with three additional prospects in the pipeline.

OUR ITALIAN PROJECTS

SICILY SOUTH

Sicily South will have a planned capacity of 1,150 MW, which is significant in terms of renewable energy generation. This capacity is expected to support approximately 1.15 million Italian homes, providing them with clean and sustainable energy.

LATEST MILESTONES

The latest project milestone was achieved in 2023 with the Scoping for the EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment). The next milestone will be the geophysical investigation which is planned to start sometime during 2024. Earlier milestones are the obtainment of site exclusivity and the interconnection permits in 2022.

SARDINIA SOUTH 1

Sardinia South 1 The south coast of Sardinia offers the perfect conditions for offshore wind electricity generation. With a planned capacity of 1,550 MW, Sardinia South 1 will be able to supply many households and industries in Sardinia with clean electricity for years to come.

SARDINIA NORTH WEST

Sardinia North West is planned outside the coast of Sardinia, where the waters are deep and the winds strong, making it a suitable location for floating offshore wind. The project's capacity is estimated to be 1,300 MW, which will be able to deliver electricity to communities in Sardinia for decades to come. The project progresses according to plan.

SARDINIA SOUTH 2

Sardinia South 2 is planned outside the coast of Sardinia. With a planned capacity of 700 MW, it will generate clean and sustainable electricity. This capacity is expected to support approximately 700,000 Italian homes. The project will significantly contribute to the energy supply of the closest regions, helping them meet their renewable energy targets and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
