HEXICON IN THE UK

Discover Hexicon’s projects in the UK, where we are at the forefront of floating offshore wind development. Learn more about our developments, including the TwinHub project, and how we're supporting innovation and contributing to the UK's ambitious renewable energy targets.

THE FLOATING OFFSHORE WIND MARKET IN THE UK

The UK continues to lead the way in Europe's offshore wind energy industry, with plans to expand its capacity to 50 GW by 2030. The recent challenges in the Contracts for Difference (CfD) auctions have raised concerns about the rising costs of offshore projects, but the government remains committed to the development of floating offshore wind (FOW). With the UK focusing on increasing renewable energy production, floating wind solutions are crucial to meeting these targets. The UK’s emphasis on offshore wind developments presents a significant opportunity for Hexicon as a developer.

PROJECT PLANNING

Project planning for offshore wind developments in the UK involves navigating both regulatory and financial landscapes. This includes participating in CfD auctions, as demonstrated by Hexicon’s success in winning the first-ever dedicated CfD for floating wind in the UK with its TwinHub project. Securing a CfD ensures 15 years of revenue support, significantly de-risking the project. Additionally, project planning entails ensuring compliance with environmental assessments and establishing reliable grid connections. With the UK government pushing for innovation in deep-water wind farms, floating platforms like Hexicon's TwinWind™ are becoming increasingly relevant.

PENTLAND & TWINHUB

Hexicon’s presence in the UK is anchored by two major projects. The Pentland Floating Offshore Wind Farm, in partnership with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) and Eurus Energy UK Ltd, highlights Hexicon's collaborative approach to development. Meanwhile, the TwinHub project, which is 100% owned by Hexicon, will serve as a pilot testing site for the TwinWind™ technology. These ventures demonstrate Hexicon’s leadership in floating wind and position it to drive innovation in the UK’s offshore wind industry.

OUR UK PROJECTS

TWINHUB

TwinHub is a project fully owned and managed by Hexicon since 2021. It aims to pilot Hexicon’s innovative TwinWind™ technology, featuring two 8 MW MingYang turbines per floating platform.

Once operational, the project will have a total capacity of 32 MW, generating clean energy for approximately 45,000 households in Cornwall. In a significant achievement, Hexicon secured the first-ever dedicated Contracts for Difference (CfD) for floating wind in the UK with the TwinHub project, ensuring 15 years of revenue support, significantly de-risking the project.

LATEST MILESTONES

The TwinHub project has recently reached a key milestone in advancing TwinWind’s floating offshore wind technology by initiating the Integrated Load Analysis (ILA) with MingYang. This evaluation ensures the system's structural safety and performance in various environmental conditions, helping to meet regulatory standards and move the project closer to commercialisation. With TwinHub, TwinWind is also approaching Technology Readiness Level 8 (TRL8), positioning it strongly within the growing floating wind market. The project remains on track with plans for detailed design, fabrication, and installation in the coming years, setting a clear path for growth and market entry.

PENTLAND FLOATING WIND FARM

PENTLAND FLOATING WIND FARM Hexicon AB, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) and Eurus Energy UK Ltd. are joint venture partners in the 100 MW Pentland floating wind farm project.

The project was initially developed by Hexicon in 2015, and in 2020 Hexicon divested 90 % of the shares to Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners. Once built, Pentland will be the largest offshore wind farm in Scotland, located nine kilometres from shore, near Dounreay, in 90–100 meters of water depths.

The project is maturing according to plan and is in the late development stage. Seabed is secured and both offshore and onshore permits have been awarded to the project. Seabed survey of the site was completed in 2023 and the next milestone, which is the offtake auction, is expected to be achieved in the near future.
